A SHOW ABOUT BEING A F*ING IMMIGRANT
A compelling new show that delves into the humorous and murky journey of trying and failing to fulfill your dreams. After migrating from one of the most dangerous and chaotic countries, Venezuela, a comedian finds herself craving her rags to riches story without success. What happens when she is faced with the possibility that her life isn’t a film and she might just be stuck in her worst nightmare, teaching kids.
Premiered in Edinghburh Fringe 2024, "The English Teacher" is a story about resilience, adaptation, and the search for meaning in a foreign land or at least a Hollywood ending. Alicia brings her pungent, millennial-angst comedic perspective and provides a refreshing and relatable lens through which audiences can explore the complexities of migration, career struggles, and fluctuating ideas of self-worth.
Alicia Montoya has been a comedian since 2019, touring in countries like France, Germany, Mexico, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, United States. You can see her in various venues across Spain with Evencio Criado in You Are Sleeping On The Couch, as a guest comedian in Monologueo de Mediodía at Madrid’s El Golfo Comedy Club as well as touring Europe on her spare time .
Reviews
- "Alicia was fantastic! She had a great sense of humour and her timing was wonderful. I normally don’t go to comedy shows for fear of it being not funny but I am pleased to say this was indeed quite funny. Alicia was full of heart, her stories of migration, unemployment, and growing older, all were very real and raw. Learning to poke fun at it and laugh through it all is a skill and I’m glad I got to explore that with a talented comedian such as herself.." © Simone
- "Alicia put on a great show filled with funny stories of her time travelling from country to country before becoming a teacher. Very likeable, great energy and left the whole audience laughing. If you want to support an unknown comedian, support Alicia!" © Mitchell
- "Nice atmosphere and excellent observational humour" © Thomas
